THE 30-SECOND ANSWER
- Shortlist MailerLite when newsletters, a manageable automation set, straightforward team access, and two-way subscriber sync cover the job.
- Shortlist Omnisend when ecommerce events, native Shopify tracking, email-plus-SMS planning, and store-focused automations are central to the operation.
- Choose neither from a headline price. Build a live quote and a controlled workflow test for the same workload first.
MailerLite and Omnisend do not define usage in exactly the same way. A fair comparison starts by translating your Shopify operation into five inputs: billable audience, monthly sends, essential flows, migration time, and support requirements.
Compare billing rules before monthly prices
| Question | MailerLite | Omnisend |
|---|---|---|
| Who counts? | Active subscribers count. Unsubscribed and bounced addresses do not, although an address active during the billing cycle can remain in that cycle’s cumulative count. | Subscribers and non-subscribers who receive automated messages count. Published pricing says unsubscribed contacts do not. |
| Free-plan scale | Up to 250 subscribers and 2,500 monthly emails. | Up to 250 contacts and 500 monthly emails. |
| Paid email allowance | Comfort uses a monthly allowance tied to the subscriber tier; Power publishes unlimited monthly email under fair use. | Standard publishes 12× list size per month; Pro publishes unlimited email with a fair-use ceiling of up to 60× list size. |
| What changes the quote? | Subscriber tier, sending needs, plan, and billing term. | Billable-contact tier, Standard or Pro, channels, and billing term. |
These are plan rules, not matched prices. Both pricing pages are interactive and can change. Enter the same list size and normal sending workload on the live pages before making a decision.
What 5,000 contacts actually means
A list size is not a send volume. Four full-list campaigns to 5,000 reachable people equal 20,000 campaign sends before automations, resends, testing, and failed deliveries. If your store also runs browse, cart, checkout, welcome, and post-purchase flows, model those sends separately.
Use the Cart Merit 12-month calculator to add migration labor, overlapping subscriptions, add-ons, and a future list-size change. A lower month-one invoice can still produce a more expensive first year.
The Shopify workflow difference
MailerLite documents two-way synchronization for subscriber identity, marketing status, and selected fields. It also receives order and product data for segmentation, product blocks, revenue reporting, and supported ecommerce triggers. Its current Shopify documentation notes an important boundary: abandoned-checkout workflows and abandoned-cart workflows are not the same, and the documented abandoned-checkout trigger has eligibility limits.
Omnisend documents automatic customer, product, and order sync plus storefront activity tracking for store-focused automations. For Shopify Online Store 2.0, its current instructions require the Omnisend App Embed; without it, storefront forms and tracking events may not work.
Write down the exact event that starts each revenue-critical flow, who is eligible to enter it, which consent state is required, and which system receives status changes. Then reproduce that job in a test account. “Integrates with Shopify” is not proof that two flows behave identically.
Five checks before you switch
- Recalculate the billable audience
Apply each provider’s rules to the same export instead of copying one dashboard count into both quotes.
- Count normal monthly sends
Separate campaigns, automations, resends, and seasonal peaks.
- Rebuild the essential flows
Test consent, triggers, delays, exclusions, product data, and reporting with controlled profiles.
- Price migration and overlap
Include data cleanup, templates, forms, QA, team training, and the period when both subscriptions remain active.
- Test the support path
Ask one real setup question and record the response channel, timing, and plan restrictions before launch.
Our verdict is conditional
Choose a MailerLite test when simplicity is the requirement
MailerLite deserves a controlled test when your core job is email, your automation map is contained, its documented Shopify behavior covers the required events, and the applicable live tier fits your normal sending volume.
Choose an Omnisend test when ecommerce depth is the requirement
Omnisend deserves a controlled test when Shopify event tracking, ecommerce-first workflows, and a coordinated email/SMS plan are more important than selecting the simplest email-only operation.
Stay where you are when the test is incomplete
Do not migrate a working revenue system because a comparison page names a winner. If consent, flow parity, reporting, or rollback remains uncertain, pause and test the missing requirement first.
BUYER QUESTIONS
Common questions before you decide
Is MailerLite cheaper than Omnisend at 5,000 contacts?
Not reliably from list size alone. Enter 5,000 on both live pricing pages, choose the plans that include your required features, and compare the same campaign and automation volume, billing term, channels, and migration cost.
Which one is better for a small Shopify store?
MailerLite may suit a newsletter-first, simpler operation; Omnisend may suit a more ecommerce-event-driven operation. Store size does not settle the choice—the required workflows and who must maintain them do.
Can Cart Merit predict which will deliver more revenue?
No. Public documentation cannot predict revenue or inbox placement for your domain, audience, offer, content, and sending history. Use authenticated domains and a controlled live test.
Should I cancel my current platform before testing?
No. Keep a rollback path, verify forms and revenue-critical flows, reconcile consent and reporting, and only then plan a cutover and cancellation date.
