THE SHORT ANSWER

Shortlist a move if the candidate supports your essential workflows and the first-year saving survives labor, overlap, and normal pricing. Stay—or test first—if critical features are unverified, the existing setup earns its keep, or the saving depends on an introductory discount.

For a lean Shopify team, the expensive part of a migration is often not the new plan. It is finding time to rebuild a system while the old one is still running.

First compare the same job

Take your latest invoice and write down the account size, normal sending volume, SMS destinations, add-ons, and renewal terms. Ask for a candidate quote covering that same workload. A price for a smaller reachable audience is not a like-for-like saving.

Do not treat the number beside “newsletter subscribers” as a universal billing unit. Klaviyo documents active-profile billing; our Omnisend plan guide explains its billable-contact definition. Verify both counts before you compare quotes.

A $100 monthly difference can become a $470 first-year saving

This is an invented scenario to explain the calculation—not a current Klaviyo or Omnisend quote, a customer case study, or a forecast.

Cost assumptionStaySwitch
12 months of software$250 × 12 = $3,000$150 × 12 = $1,800
Migration: 12 hours at $40$480
Old plan retained for one monthAlready included$250 extra
First-year economic cost$3,000$2,530

The subscription difference is $1,200 per year. After the assumed work and overlap, it is $470; costs are recovered in month 8. Change the work estimate to 20 hours at $80, and switching costs $650 more in year one. Neither calculation includes a change in marketing performance.

Time is an economic cost even when nobody sends an extra invoice. Conversely, this model is not a cash-flow schedule: prepaid contracts and payment dates need a separate cash budget.

What to verify before calling it a migration

A successful contact import is not proof that your business process has moved. Make a list of required events, suppression rules, forms, offers, and reports. For each one, record where it lives now, how you will reproduce it, who checks it, and how you will roll back.

Omnisend publishes a Klaviyo migration guide. Treat that as the vendor’s starting instructions, not independent evidence that your custom implementation will transfer without work.

  • Revenue-critical automations: check triggers, filters, delays, exit conditions, discounts, and who must never receive a message.
  • Data and integrations: check subscription status, property mapping, purchase events, and any nonstandard app connections.
  • Operating effort: have the person who sends campaigns build one complete example. Record the actual time.
  • Measurement: keep attribution windows and definitions consistent. A change in reported revenue is not automatically a real performance change.

When staying is the sensible answer

Stay for now if your existing flows depend on an unverified integration, if a migration would collide with a major sales period, or if you cannot name who will own QA. You can still audit add-ons, unused capacity, and renewal terms without changing providers.

Moving can be worth it for a capability or operating benefit even without immediate savings. If that is your reason, name and test the benefit instead of disguising it as a cost reduction.

Your next decision

Use the side-by-side decision worksheet if your requirements are still unclear. If costs and compatibility both hold up, work through the migration acceptance checklist before changing live traffic.
